Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder and the management is an important criterion for pharmacotherapy. One of the most critical complications of diabetes is postprandial hyperglycemia. Glucose metabolizing enzyme inhibitors are class of compounds that help in managing postprandial hyperglycemia. Medicinal plants and herbal treatment is recommended in preventing and progress of the disease with lesser side effects. Present study deals with screening methanolic leaf (DALE) and bark (DABE) extracts of Dolichandrone atrovirens for their efficacy to inhibit α-glucosidase, α-amylase and glucose-6-phosphatase in the in vitro systems. Potent and dose dependent inhibition of these carbohydrate digestive enzymes was observed for both DALE and DABE and the observed results were comparable to standard drug acarbose and metformin. This enzyme inhibition provided a strong in vitro evidence for confirmation of both DALE and DABE as excellent antidiabetic remedy. These results provide an intense rationale for further in vivo and clinical study.
